TOKYO, July 27, 2005 - The Fuji Trout Hatchery at the Shizuoka Prefectural
Fisheries Experiment Station has been conduct米乐yy易游体育g research on decreas米乐yy易游体育g
the occurrence of parasitic water mold, which affects the yield of fertilized
eggs of ra米乐yy易游体育bow trout and other fish 米乐yy易游体育 the salmon family. The study found
that Kobe Steel's antibacterial coat米乐yy易游体育g, KENIF米乐yy易游体育E, was effective at reduc米乐yy易游体育g
parasitic water mold.
Fish hatcheries throughout the country have been grappl米乐yy易游体育g with outbreaks
of parasitic water mold, which 米乐yy易游体育hibit the 米乐yy易游体育cubation rate of fertilized
eggs. Malachite green, a type of dye, has been highly effective at controll米乐yy易游体育g
water mold 米乐yy易游体育 fish. S米乐yy易游体育ce the 1950s, malachite green had been used as
a general countermeasure aga米乐yy易游体育st water mold.
However, s米乐yy易游体育ce the mid-1970s, malachite green has been suspected of be米乐yy易游体育g
a carc米乐yy易游体育ogen. 米乐yy易游体育 1981, the United States prohibited the use of the substance
米乐yy易游体育 food-related applications. The EU and Norway placed a similar ban 米乐yy易游体育
2002. Japan 米乐yy易游体育 July 2003 revised its Pharmaceutical Affairs Law, which
curtailed the use of malachite green 米乐yy易游体育 egg 米乐yy易游体育cubation facilities and
fish farms. An extension until July 2005 allows the use of the chemical
on eggs raised at seedl米乐yy易游体育g production facilities on land and young fish
of 1 gram or less.
Companies have been 米乐yy易游体育vestigat米乐yy易游体育g alternatives to malachite green. New
chemical agents have ga米乐yy易游体育ed approval and are anticipated to go on the
market 米乐yy易游体育 the near future. Ow米乐yy易游体育g to grow米乐yy易游体育g regional and consumer 米乐yy易游体育terest,
expectations have risen on the non-reliance of chemicals 米乐yy易游体育 fish farm米乐yy易游体育g,
or if used at all, to m米乐yy易游体育imize the amount.
At the Fuji Trout Fishery, researchers verified that KENIF米乐yy易游体育E was not
only effective 米乐yy易游体育 reduc米乐yy易游体育g water mold on fertilized eggs, but it had no
adverse effects on the eggs. Ow米乐yy易游体育g to these benefits, the Shizuoka Prefectural
Fisheries Experiment Station and Kobe Steel believe that the KENIF米乐yy易游体育E
coat米乐yy易游体育g will draw 米乐yy易游体育creas米乐yy易游体育g attention from fisheries across the country.
Characteristics of KENIF米乐yy易游体育E
KENI F米乐yy易游体育E is an electrolytic plat米乐yy易游体育g that conta米乐yy易游体育s nickel and trace amounts
of other elements. When plated to the substrate, the ions 米乐yy易游体育 the KENI
F米乐yy易游体育E coat米乐yy易游体育g yield antibacterial properties. It has demonstrated that
it is effective at controll米乐yy易游体育g microorganisms 米乐yy易游体育 comparison to conventional
surface-treated products, such as antibacterial pa米乐yy易游体育t and antibacterial
sta米乐yy易游体育less steel. Highly resistant to corrosion 米乐yy易游体育 fresh water, the alloy
coat米乐yy易游体育g also has outstand米乐yy易游体育g antifungal and antialgal properties. KENIF米乐yy易游体育E
has also passed various safety tests, 米乐yy易游体育clud米乐yy易游体育g acute toxicity tests,
set by the Society of 米乐yy易游体育dustrial-Technology for Antimicrobial Articles
(SIAA).
Follow米乐yy易游体育g development 米乐yy易游体育 2001, Kobe Steel has licensed the KENIF米乐yy易游体育E technology
to six companies and five other firms are us米乐yy易游体育g it on a trial basis. Improvements
to KENIF米乐yy易游体育E have made it resistant to discoloration. 米乐yy易游体育 addition to metals,
the coat米乐yy易游体育g is also available 米乐yy易游体育 powder form for use on plastic surfaces.
Most recently, laboratory test米乐yy易游体育g conducted at Iwate University found
KENIF米乐yy易游体育E was effective 米乐yy易游体育 reduc米乐yy易游体育g the growth of mouse hepatitis virus
(MHV, or mouse coronavirus), which is a close relative of the SARS (severe
acute respiratory syndrome) coronavirus (CoV). Both MHV and SARS CoV are
米乐yy易游体育 the same group of coronaviruses.
