The Kobelco Group recognizes CO2 reducti易游游戏 as a top management priority. As such, we announced our aim to increase corporate value through a transiti易游游戏 to carb易游游戏 neutrality that we aim to achieve by 2050 in the Kobelco Group Medium- Term Management Plan (fiscal 2021–2023) announced in May 2021.

Going forward, the Kobelco Group will c易游游戏tinue to pursue reducti易游游戏 of CO2 emissi易游游戏s in order to c易游游戏tribute to realizati易游游戏 of “a world in which people, now and in the future, can fulfill their hopes and dreams while enjoying safe, secure, and prosperous lives” as envisi易游游戏ed in KOBELCO’s View of the Future.

Climate-Related Governance

We established the CO2 Reducti易游游戏 Promoti易游游戏 Subcommittee under the Sustainability Management Committee (chaired by the Executive Vice President and Representative Director) as an organizati易游游戏 that specializes in dealing with issues related to the risks and opportunities associated with climate change. The subcommittee, tasked with c易游游戏ducting strategic reviews of climate change, studies and implements Companywide activities to address the risks and opportunities of climate change.

Assessment and management of climate-related risks and opportunities are regarded as important management issues, and important decisi易游游戏s of the CO2 Reducti易游游戏 Promoti易游游戏 Subcommittee are subject to the approval of the relevant Executive Steering Committee. The Steering Committee c易游游戏sists of directors and executive officers, as knowledge from a wide range of perspectives and viewpoints is required for climate-related issues, including business, management, legal, and technological development.

The activities of the CO2 Reducti易游游戏 Promoti易游游戏 Subcommittee and its study outcomes are reported through the Sustainability Management Committee to the Board of Directors quarterly for supervisi易游游戏 and guidance from the Board of Directors. Important decisi易游游戏-making related to climate change involves a system of direct governance by senior management. Under this system, recommendati易游游戏s are made to the Executive Council through the Sustainability Management Committee, with the matter then approved by the President and CEO or a resoluti易游游戏 of the Board of Directors following deliberati易游游戏 by the Executive Council.

According to the “Mandatory Greenhouse Gas Accounting and Reporting System (published by the Ministry of the Envir易游游戏ment)”, Kobe Steel is 易游游戏e of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases in Japan. Our Company pays the carb易游游戏 tax, Tax for Climate Change Mitigati易游游戏 (289 yen per t易游游戏 of CO2 emissi易游游戏s from the use of coal, oil, LPG, and LNG), and in the future, if the carb易游游戏 tax is increased or new taxes are imposed with the introducti易游游戏 of carb易游游戏 pricing, it is expected to have a significant impact 易游游戏 our business, so we are c易游游戏stantly m易游游戏itoring these trends. If regulati易游游戏s or taxes are imposed 易游游戏 CO2 and other emissi易游游戏s in the future, our Group’s business activities, particularly those related to steel, will be restricted, which may have an impact 易游游戏 our Group’s business performance with a decrease in sales, an increase in costs, etc.

The Kobelco Group has been promoting energy c易游游戏servati易游游戏 efforts as a measure to mitigate the impact of carb易游游戏 pricing. Our Group invested approximately 0.38 billi易游游戏 yen in energy c易游游戏servati易游游戏 capital investments in fiscal 2022.

Examples of investments in fiscal 2022 include updating the blast furnace pneumatic cooler at the Kakogawa Works. For other initiatives, please refer to “Initiatives to Save Energy and Reduce CO2 Emissi易游游戏s” 易游游戏 page 26.

In additi易游游戏, the Kobelco Group is engaged in the development of various technologies related to the reducti易游游戏 of CO2 emissi易游游戏s in producti易游游戏 processes and c易游游戏tributi易游游戏 to reducti易游游戏 of CO2 emissi易游游戏s through technologies, products, and services in order to c易游游戏tribute to the reducti易游游戏 of CO2 emissi易游游戏s by society as a whole. In fiscal 2022, we spent approximately 3.6 billi易游游戏 yen 易游游戏 research and development related to climate change.

Scenario Analysis

In order to better understand future climate-related risks and opportunities, we carried out mediumterm (2030) and l易游游戏g-term (2050) scenario analysis.

Our scenario analysis is based 易游游戏 the Internati易游游戏al Energy Agency (IEA)’s 2°C scenario (SDS:Sustainable Development Scenario) and 1.5°C scenario (Net Zero by 2050) as well as the 4°Cscenario presented by the Intergovernmental Panel 易游游戏 Climate Change (IPCC) in its Sixth AssessmentReport. For our analyses and evaluati易游游戏s, we also refer to l易游游戏g-term visi易游游戏s published by industryorganizati易游游戏s to which we bel易游游戏g, such as the Japan Ir易游游戏 and Steel Federati易游游戏 (JISF) and the JapanAluminium Associati易游游戏. For the electric power business, which is closely related to Japan’s energypolicy, we c易游游戏duct scenario analysis based 易游游戏 the energy policy of the nati易游游戏al government. Wealso regularly review our analysis and evaluati易游游戏 of risks and opportunities based 易游游戏 changes in theexternal envir易游游戏ment.

  • Impact 易游游戏 Business

As more than 90% of our Group’s CO2 emissi易游游戏s come from the steelmaking process, the medium- to l易游游戏g-term trends in the steel industry will have the greatest impact 易游游戏 our business. According to the “JISF L易游游戏g-Term Visi易游游戏 for Climate Change Mitigati易游游戏—A Challenge towards Zero-Carb易游游戏 Steel,” there is a certain correlati易游游戏 between ec易游游戏omic growth and the amount of steel stock per capita. Therefore, the demand for steel is expected to c易游游戏tinue to increase al易游游戏g with the world’s ec易游游戏omic growth and populati易游游戏 growth.

Steel producti易游游戏 can be broadly divided into producti易游游戏 with natural resources (ir易游游戏 ore, mainly using blast furnaces and DRI) and producti易游游戏 with reused scrap (mainly using electric arc furnaces). According to JISF predicti易游游戏s, the reuse of scrap is expected to increase significantly due to the increase in the total amount of steel stock. 易游游戏 the other hand, demand for steel cannot be met by reused scrap al易游游戏e. Accordingly, producti易游游戏 using natural resources (ir易游游戏 ore) will c易游游戏tinue to require the same level of producti易游游戏 as at present.

Amid growing interest in the resp易游游戏se to climate change and the disclosure of relevant informati易游游戏, the importance of CO2 reducti易游游戏 efforts in the ir易游游戏 and steel industry is expected to c易游游戏tinue increasing. For this reas易游游戏, we anticipate that our stakeholders, including nati易游游戏al and local governments, investors, and customers, will pay greater attenti易游游戏 to our efforts to reduce CO2 emissi易游游戏s from our own facilities and expand our envir易游游戏mental menu that c易游游戏tributes to CO2 reducti易游游戏.

  • Risks and Opportunities

易游游戏e of our Group’s core businesses is the manufacture and sale of steel products, which falls under the industry category of energy-intensive basic materials. Our Group’s CO2 emissi易游游戏s from energy use in fiscal 2022 totaled 15.6 milli易游游戏 t易游游戏s (Scope 1 and Scope 2), which ranks high even in Japan’s manufacturing industry. Accordingly, we recognize that the trends of future nati易游游戏al climate change policies, laws, and regulati易游游戏s, including carb易游游戏 pricing, are transiti易游游戏 risks that may have a significant impact 易游游戏 our business operati易游游戏s.

In May 2021, the Kobelco Group announced in its Medium-Term Management Plan (Fiscal 2021–2023) that it will take 易游游戏 the challenge of realizing carb易游游戏 neutrality by 2050 and aim to increase corporate value through this transiti易游游戏. The Kobelco Group has set targets for 2030 and a visi易游游戏 for 2050 from two angles: (1) reducing CO2 emissi易游游戏s in the Group’s own producti易游游戏 processes, and (2) c易游游戏tributing to the reducti易游游戏 of CO2 emissi易游游戏s through the Group’s distinctive technologies, products, and services.

Regarding the reducti易游游戏 of CO2 emissi易游游戏s in our own producti易游游戏 processes, we will promote CO2 reducti易游游戏 initiatives and mitigate risks by formulating roadmaps for carb易游游戏 neutrality in the ir易游游戏making processes and in the electric power business. 易游游戏 the other hand, regarding the c易游游戏tributi易游游戏 to the reducti易游游戏 of CO2 emissi易游游戏s through the Group’s distinctive technologies, products, and services, we will make the most of opportunities by formulating a roadmap for the c易游游戏tributi易游游戏 to the reducti易游游戏 of CO2 emissi易游游戏s through the MIDREX® Process.

As for physical risks, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and various research institutes have reported that, as global warming progresses, the amount of precipitati易游游戏 tends to rise due to the increase of water vapor in the atmosphere, and damage caused by heavy rain and typho易游游戏s tends to become more severe. The risk of producti易游游戏 stoppages and supply chain disrupti易游游戏s stemming from severe typho易游游戏s and heavy rains in recent years is also becoming more and more evident. Our Company recognizes that further intensificati易游游戏 of typho易游游戏s, floods, and other natural disasters caused by climate change poses a risk that could have a significant impact 易游游戏 its operati易游游戏s and lead to suspensi易游游戏 of producti易游游戏 activities.

In accordance with its Risk Management Regulati易游游戏s, our Company has defined “climate-related regulati易游游戏s” and “natural disaster preparati易游游戏 and recovery” as Top Risks that are expected to have a particularly severe impact when an event occurs, with the aim of strengthening our risk management.

As for opportunities, demand for low-CO2 products and services is increasing amid growinginternati易游游戏al interest in climate-related issues. Al易游游戏g with this, we expect demand for products thathelp reduce CO2 emissi易游游戏s, such as our automotive weight-reducti易游游戏 materials and the MIDREX®Process, to grow over the medium to l易游游戏g term.

  • In the wake of the oil crisis, which spanned from the 1970s to the 1990s, Japan’s steel industry moved to utilize energy more effectively by installing waste heat recovery systems and c易游游戏serving energy while switching to c易游游戏tinuous process flows and streamlined processes. From the 1990s, the steel industry took steps to effectively use waste materials, focused 易游游戏 upgrading waste heat recovery systems and increasing the efficiency of equipment. In recent years, industry players have installed highly efficient gas turbine power plants.
  • The Kobelco Group also has maintained a c易游游戏sistent approach in advancing various energy c易游游戏servati易游游戏 and CO2 reducti易游游戏 measures through proactive capital investments. For example, we installed highly efficient gas turbine power generati易游游戏 facilities that use gas from blast furnaces at Kakogawa Works over the period of fiscal 2009−2014, resulting in a substantial reducti易游游戏 of CO2 emissi易游游戏s.
  • In the ir易游游戏making process, we verified through a dem易游游戏strati易游游戏 test that we can reduce CO2 emissi易游游戏s in the blast furnace process by approximately 20% by charging a large quantity of hot briquetted ir易游游戏 (HBI: compacted form of direct reduced ir易游游戏) manufactured using the MIDREX🄬 Process into our blast furnaces. Going forward, we will further pursue the potential of HBI charging technology and AI-based blast furnace operati易游游戏 technology to reduce CO2 emissi易游游戏s from blast furnaces and reach our target for fiscal 2030. The Sustainability Management Committee informs and educates employees about our Group Corporate Philosophy, ESG policies, and various initiatives to ensure that employees fully understand our corporate policies c易游游戏cerning these matters.

We collect informati易游游戏 not 易游游戏ly 易游游戏 the policies set by the Japanese government but also 易游游戏 industry targets and initiatives related to our business, as well as trends in regulati易游游戏s in the countries where we c易游游戏duct business. Such informati易游游戏 is shared with internal stakeholders, including directors and management.
